Chorus Ecclesiae Cathedralis

The Chorus Ecclesiae Cathedralis was foundChorus Ecclesiae Cathedralis (4)ed in early 1968 by Monsignor Carmelo Scicluna, vicar and acting parish priest of the Cathedral. Its first musical director was Maria Zammit LRSM. It was the first parish choir formed in Gozo following the recommendations and renovations of the second Vatican Council (1962-65).

It is the resident choir of the Cathedral of Gozo and, as such, is raison d’être is the enhancement of the liturgy during services held both by the Cathedral Chapter as well as by the Cathedral Parish. The choir made its first public appearance on Sunday, 19 May 1968, when it sang mass at the opening of the annual Liturgical-Eucharist week in preparation for the Quarant’Ore held the following Sunday. It was named the Kor Marija Assunta.

In 1995, following a restructuring exercise, it was decided to give it a name more consonant with its duties at the Cathedral – hence the Chorus Ecclesiae Cathedralis.

Besides offering its services at the Cathedral, the Choir has in the past years participated in various concerts through which it succeeded to revive with success a number of works that form part of the rich musical archives of the Gozo Cathedral.

The Choir is currently made of some 30 members, all of whom volunteer their services. Its musical director is Colin Attard, who is also the Cathedral’s Maestro di Cappella.
